Chartered August 29, 2013, the Beta Mu Nu has been working, serving, and celebrating the brotherhood since their inception. Since that time, Beta Mu Nu Chapter has been making a positive impact by “uplifting” communities of Shelby County, AL, and surrounding areas.

Chartering Celebration
The newest chapter in the State of Alabama, Beta Mu Nu, held its Chartering Celebration on November 17, 2013 at Valley Elementary School in Pelham, AL. The Beta Mu Nu was chartered on August 29, 2013 in Calera, AL Alabama (Calera was the city at the center of the Voting Rights Act Supreme Court decision earlier this year). The brothers in the foundation stage of the chapter felt that it was time for a presence of Omega to become manifest in Shelby County.

Charter Request
On May 31, 2013, the final draft of the charter request was sent to IHQ with the following brothers as charter members: Bro. Bobby Pierson, Bro. Don Bennett, Bro. Dwight Smith, Bro. Gerald Seaborn, Bro. Shawn Haynes, Bro. Shannon Lott, Bro. Landon Jones, Bro. Joseph Hampton, Bro. Diego Howard, Bro. Wesley Hall, Bro. Timothy Alexander, and Bro. Sidney R. Lankford, Jr. The District Representative for the Seventh District, Dr. David Marion, PhD, delivered the Message to the chapter and installed the officers. The officers of Beta Mu Nu are: Basileus-Bro. Joseph Hampton; Vice Basileus-Bro. Diego Howard; Keeper of Records and Seal-Bro. Sidney R. Lankford, Jr.; Asst. Keeper of Records and Seal-Bro. Gerald Seaborn; Keeper of Finance-Bro. Landon A. Jones; Asst. Keeper of Finance-Bro. Darrell Griffin; Chaplain-Bro. Jerome Hill; Editor-Bro. Thomas Brown; Parliamentarian-Bro. Bobby Maxena; Keeper of Peace-Bro. Donald Bennett. The State Representative, Bro. Fred Gray, Jr., gave the closing remarks of the day and encouraged the men of Beta Mu Nu Chapter to continue the great work already being done in Shelby County.

Recognition
In 1912, Howard University officials did not initially recognize the fraternity as a national organization and Omega Psi Phi’s leadership refused to only accept local recognition. As a result, the fraternity operated without official sanction, until the university withdrew its opposition in 1914, the same year that the Beta Chapter was chartered at Lincoln University. Omega Psi Phi was incorporated under the laws of the District of Columbia on October 28, 1914. George E. Hall, the fourth Grand Basileus, authorized the establishment of Gamma Chapter in Boston.

Alpha Chapter Leadership
Alpha Chapter was organized with fourteen charter members on December 15, 1911. Love, Cooper and Coleman were elected the chapter’s first Basileus, Keeper of Records, and Keeper of Seals, respectively. Cooper became the fraternity’s second Grand Basileus in 1912 and authorized the investigation of a proposed second chapter at Lincoln University, Penn. Love was elected as the third Grand Basileus in 1912 and served until 1915.

Leadership
On November 23, 1911 in Thirkield Hall, Love became the first Grand Basileus (National President). Cooper and Coleman were selected to be the Grand Keeper of the Records (National Secretary) and Grand Keeper of Seals (National Treasurer), respectively. Eleven Howard University undergraduate men were selected to be the charter members.

Our Foundation
Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. is the first international fraternal organization to be founded on the campus of a historically black college. Omega Psi Phi was founded on November 17, 1911, at Howard University in Washington, D.C. The founders were three Howard University undergraduates, — Edgar Amos Love, Oscar James Cooper and Frank Coleman. Joining them was their faculty adviser, Dr. Ernest Everett Just. From the initials of the Greek phrase meaning, “friendship is essential to the soul,” the name Omega Psi Phi was derived. That phrase was selected as the motto. Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance and Uplift were adopted as Cardinal Principles.
