Salvation Army Kettle Bell Campaign
Description
The Red Kettle Bell Campaign began with a Salvation Army Captain, Joseph McFee, in December of 1891 with the goal of providing free Christmas dinners to the impoverished people in the San Francisco area. Today, the Salvation Army Kettle Bell Campaign has grown tremendously serving over 30 million people worldwide during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.
Annually, the Beta Mu Nu Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. participated in the annual Salvation Army Red Kettle Bell Ringing at the Pelham area Walmart. The sound of Christmas carols and holiday bells could be heard throughout the day. Generous shoppers filled the red kettle buckets with monetary donations. These funds help support year-round programs provided by the Salvation Army’s area community centers.
Holiday Dinner Giveaway
Description
The Beta Mu Nu Chapter, BMN, of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. came together with two community servicing organizations, Family Connection and Safe House, to provide them with turkeys for Thanksgiving. Family Connection is a multi-service non-profit agency providing services for children, youth and families in Shelby County and the Greater Birmingham Metropolitan area of Alabama.
Through a variety of crisis prevention and intervention programs, Family Connection is dedicated to building positive futures for the community’s most vulnerable children, teens and families. SafeHouse of Shelby County offers critical domestic and sexual violence response and prevention programs for the communities of Shelby, Coosa, and Clay Counties in Central Alabama. Several of the Brothers of BMN traveled to both locations to deliver the turkeys so they could be provided to the needy families that those organizations serve. Both of the receiving organizations were overwhelmed with the donations.
